SPACE OPERA

Space Opera is a subclass of science fiction that mark galaxy war, histrionic adventures, battles between the planets, gothic romance, riskiness adventures. It set mainly or exclusively in outer space. There are various movies, comics, books, web series, video games, television series, etc based on Space Opera.  The term ‘Space Opera’ is not related to music, as in a traditional opera. Space opera appeared in the 1930s and continued to be published comics, films, books, and games. In 1936, Flash Gordon a film which is based on the Space Opera comic strips, created by Alex Raymond. George Lucas’s film The Star Wars made a huge deal of attraction to this subclass. After the breaking of convention “new-wave”, followed by the great success of The Star Wars films, Space Opera became again an extremely acceptable subclass.

            The term ‘Space Opera’ was appeared in 1941 by a writer and author Wilson Tucker, who used it as a dyslogistic term in an article in issue 36 of Le Zombie, a science fiction fanzine. At that time, many serial dramas in the United States became popularly known as ‘soap opera’ because many soap manufacturers sponsored the serials. The ‘Horse Opera’ had also come to describe western films.

            Some critics differentiate between Space Opera and Planetary Romance. Both have an adventure in exotic things, but Space Opera punctuates in space travel, while Planetary Romance focuses on alien worlds.

            Space Opera, emphasizes the effect of progressed technologies and inventions, where everything is carefully worked out to obey the laws of physics, cosmology, mathematics, and biology, which can be opposed to “hard science fiction”. Examples are shown in ‘The Last Starfighter’ movie. At other times, instead of focusing on scientific validity, Space Opera can accommodate hard science fiction and differ from soft science fiction, as an example The Risen Empire by Scott Westerfeld.

Kota Factory is an Indian web series directed by Raghav Subbu for The Viral Fever (TVF). This series is premiered on TVFPlay and YouTube on 16 April 2019. The show follows the life of 16-year-old Vaibhav who moves to Kota from Itarsi. It shows the lifestyle of the students in the city and struggling with student life and also Vaibhav’s effort to get into IIT. Kota, a city in Rajasthan, is a hub of many coaching centers where students come from all over India to prepare for various entrance exams. It is also the first black and white web series in India.

            Saurabh Khanna, the creator of the show, says that through Kota Factory aims to change the perspective about Kota and IIT preparation which he feels has always been one-sided emphasizing on the trauma that education brings in a student’s life.

5. Criminal Justice

Criminal justice is an Indian web series based on Criminal Justice by Peter Moffat, in India it is adapted by Shridhar Raghavan. The web series is streaming on Hotstar Specials on 5 April 2019. It is a criminal thriller story and image of some imprisonment story, which a general man never felt.

            In the story, Aditya is a cab driver who has a one-night stand with his passenger Sanaya. When he wakes up, Sanaya is murdered and finds himself in a pool of her blood, and her with multiple stab wounds. He leaves the room, but, he meets with an accident and is taken to the police station. Initially, Madhav Mishra is interested in taking the case but later on Mandira Mathur takes the case and is able to get Aditya free of charge from rape, but fails to acquit him of the murder charges. The story continues as his lawyer, Nikhat Hussain along with Madhav Mishra, tries to save him. While Aditya gets life imprisonment for the murder of Sanaya, but Madhav Mishra still believes that Aditya is innocent. Here the real story begins, the imprisonment life of Aditya is getting worse and he lost his hope for releasing from the prison. But Madhav Mishra worked so hard and finally get him free from the prison and successful to convict the real culprit.
